You can't reconcile a games story with Terminals and Datapads, that is not the real story being told and in all honesty is just simply a side story that the majority of players are simply going to ignore or not have any knowledge of at all. The fact is that the one thing Reach has in common with Halo 3 when it comes to the main story is that Joseph Staten was not really much involved or not invovled period in the writing proccess for both games... Jason Jones has been strangely absent since Halo 3 aswell which could also be a factor. As for Marathon, it was a diffirnet era (No huge focus on online multiplayer) but I'm sure Alex Seropian and Jason Jones were both factors in it's storytelling.
