In Response To: A thought that could blow your mind... (munky-058)

: What if they're both the same day?

: As a wise woman once said: “Day” is a vestigial mode of time measurement
: based on solar cycles.

: Reach has a 27 hour day right? The books were written from an Earth timeline
: in direct relation to the current events.
: Reach is told from local time.
: There has to be some way they compensate for the difference to keep it close.
: Thus making Fall of Reach the "official" time in the series, and
: Reach the "official" time on Reach.

The thing is, if Reach's local day/night cycle and yearly revolution differs in any significant way from Earth's, it won't be anywhere near the same date. A 27-hour day versus a 24-hour day over the however many hundreds of years since Reach was colonized would result in a gigantic discrepency. A quarter of a day screwed up the Romans' calendar in just a few decades, what do you think three hours and whatever the difference in revolution would make over a few centuries? It might be November when it's August.

: If all else fails, consider it as TFoR>Reach.

And this, as far as everything we've been given from Bungie is concerned, is the opposite of true. I understand you may have a personal beef with the game, but the game - in issues of direct conflict [which are fewer than everyone seems to think] - is correct.

I don't get it. I enjoyed the Fall of Reach when I first read it when I was eleven. I'm twenty now, and I've reread it more times than I can count, and honestly, it just isn't that good. It contradicts itself more times than it contradicts Reach! How many kids can you stuff in a Pelican? How do you go from seventy-five recruits to sixty-eight and then back to seventy-five in the course of three days? How do you get three Spartans from thirty-two equals twenty-eight (okay, that one was First Strike, but the same point)? Not only does the book have more internal contradictions than the game has contradictions in any form, but it plays a game with showing the Spartans as unkillable supermen (prologue: Kelly rockets Shade turrets from kilometers away, kills dozens of Grunts with the backwash; the rest of the team goads thousands of Grunts into persuit and mops them up with pre-placed mines, then defeats five Banshees [piloted by Elites whom they'd apparently never seen] before ziplining to safety and flying a Pelican to orbit) and extremely vulnerable Sam Fishers with no capacity to kill thousands of enemies (Sigma Octanus: pistol-sniping a dozen grunts, tip-toeing through the gutter, sneaking around some Jackals, surprise-encountering a mere two Hunters and almost losing a team member [remember the Rookie? Regular ODST, no trouble with Hunters]). The book also offers no explanation for the Spartans to have a reputation: if the war went as described in the Fall of Reach, the Covenant would virtually never touch boots to mud, they'd just blast the local fleet and glass the planet. Remember how surprised Keyes was when the Carrier unloaded on Sigma Octanus? The games show us that Covenant ships must be in low orbit or in-atmosphere to glass, where they are vulnerable to ground-based defences and have a reason to unload troops, which also gives the Spartans situations in which to be useful over the last twenty-five years.
