I have no problem thinking this is software related. I did a short stint as tester at MS this summer and we did have some weird crashes. However, most of them were software related, except when we were still using the Alpha and Beta boxes instead of final hardware. The weird crashes that were hardware related all but disappeared after the devs (and the test team) switched to final hardware. The Sony loyalists shouldn't get too excited about this. It's not like their console is crash-free. My copy of Escape From Monkey Island always hangs up on the same cutscene, and the PSX emulation isn't top-notch... some games hang infrequently, like Xenogears. This is to be expected from first-gen hardware.
