In Response To: Re: Stores Reporting Bugs In Microsoft's Xbox (Matt)

: Stefan just heard this from one of the MS testers...apparently some of the
: software on the demo discs was accidentally built with an old video
: library. A conflict between the finished hardware and the old library
: will, under certain conditions, manifest itself as the weirdness reported
: over the last few days.

Aaaah...Now THAT sounds about right. Unfortunately, this will only add fuel to the anti-Microsoft fire. After all, "How could this have possibly slipped through?" Well, kiddies, if I told you some of the stories of the demo (IST in my industry) loads that we shipped to customers (often with known problems)...Hoo boy...You'd be pro-Microsoft; well, okay, maybe not. :) My point? Whether your the dreaded MS or just Joe Blow's Software, sometimes mistakes happen. Especially when you're dealing with X number of revisions of H/W with Y number of revisions of S/W in the field.

That being said, however, it's a very serious mistake for a company's first venture into the console industry. Many are already skeptical about MS's capability to penetrate this market (one need only glance at this board for evidence of that). Indeed, many question their ability to even MAKE a stable platform (all those Win9x users). So, although this mistake is understandable, it could be quite detrimental. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

: For anyone concerned, the final version of Halo uses a more recent library
: which does not have this problem. I expect other Xbox titles do as well.

...and I presume that the final QA of Halo was run on final H/W so if it works there, all should be safe.
