I remember hearing this idea on these boards: High Charity went into slip space and went directly into the earth. That would explain why everything (space elevator) is knocked down, that is, if the original slipspace rupture in halo 2 didn't cause it. If you look at this cutscene:

You can see that high charity can pop up pretty fast. If it came into the earth, it would cause a crater and be dug into the ground just like a meteor.
