It is a distinct possiblity that the gravity generators are used only to maintain the ring's speed and location. I'm not denying that. :-) I personally think it's more likely that they are installed to create a gravitic effect on the interior surface of Halo, however. It's the most direct assumption that can be drawn from Cortana's statement, and she would have no reason to be misleading or deliberately vague. She could be wrong about their purpose, though. In any event, artificial gravity generators do exist on Halo - the question is, what are they doing? :-) : Don't get me started on Einstein's spacetime garbage.
