This means that the ring orbits EDGE ON : between the two bodies. not necessarily -- the effects of perspective (and perhaps negative curvature to the horizon) make it possible for a number of aspects of Threshold's appearance to be possible. build a model & try it. i did -- the view from my GENESIS•1 wallpaper is from the inner surface of a ring that has its rotational axis normal to Threshold's surface. Threshold (on the far right, btw) seems to be setting below the ring horizon -- purely a perspective effect. and this model was scaled as closely as i could manage to the specs gleaned from the game, with the view set up to mimic to a large degree that which can be seen from the opening seen of level 2/Halo. i did place Basis differently, both for artistic considerations and because it helps solidify the Halo story connection. mea culpa. : If you dont freaking believe me (or lack the noodles to imagine my : description), just go to the bridge and look out the freaking window on : the Pillar of Autumn on Level 1. : P.S. The ring is actually tilted at a slight angle, so that as it rotates, : day and night sweep across its surface. this is very likely one of many possible orientations of the ring vis a vis Threshold -- as i stated in other posts, at the L1 point (which is somewhat unstable), constant station-keeping for the ring must be performed. that could very well lead to an orientation such as seen from the PoA's bridge, but it need not be the ONLY orientation. : P.S.S. I am very pissed about this whole thing, because this is exactly the : way I described the orbital cycle of Halo before the game came out. (I : think it might have been a speculation submission, help louis? Where did : they all go?) That and the fact that I have to go to summer school. i feel your pain (nyet!)
