In Response To: Re: will it go round in circles (oldmano'theC)

: at the risk of belaboring a point: "natural" gravity is a
: consequence of the warping/bending/reshaping of spacetime by mass. other
: matter moving through this bent spacetime accelerates (can be positive or
: negative, i.e., speeding up or slowing down), and the percieved effects of
: this acceleration are what we term "gravity."

What a risk that is, too bad you've already taken it. There is no proof that gravity is a warping of spacetime, it is simply an effect generated by mass. The idea of it 'warping' spacetime is simply an general theory that fits what we can observe.

: the only way to
: warp spacetime enough to generate a gravity well with an acceleration of
: 1G is with a mass equivalent to that of the earth (doesn't have to be that
: size, however -- white dwarf stars & neutron stars are made of exotic
: forms of matter that pack a sh!tload of mass into a relatively small
: space).

Gravity does not have an acceleration, sorry. Actually, white dwarves and neutron stars are not made of exotic matter that 'packs mass into a small space'. White dwarves are made of normal atoms of 'starstuff' who's combined mass is great enough to counter atomic diffusion. Neutron stars are made of normal, every day neutrons which have cast away the remainder of their atomic structure. (I.e, there are no true 'atoms' in a neutron star, only pieces of former atoms).

: however, there's lots of ways to create an acceleration which would be
: perceived as "gravity." rotation is one way, but so's putting
: the pedal to the metal in your terrestrial ICE vehicle (which causes
: fractional G forces at right angles to Earth's "natural"
: gravity, and may earn you a ticket ;-} ).

Almost funny. Almost.

: then again, use of exotic states of matter (see above) in advanced technology
: could perhaps cause a local warping of space that could be a
: "synthetic" gravity.

So, now its not exotic matter. It's simply exotic forms of ordinary matter. Too bad you missed it the first time around.

: that's always bothered me -- personally, i thinks it's a big continuity break
: on Bungie's part (perhaps even an "intentional goof"), but it
: also makes the game more playable. trying to fight in zero G would be
: incredibly fun but also incredibly disorienting. i'm willing to put up
: with a few rounded corners...

Look up the definition on 'Continuity'. And we're so glad that your 'highness' is willing to 'put up with' a few 'rounded corners'. Perhaps the Bungie team should consult your eminence more often when designing games?

: problem is, gravity isn't a field, it's a consequence of the shape of
: spacetime. near a large mass, that shape causes an acceleration toward the
: center of the mass. we call this "gravity," but it's really no
: different than the acceleration of a spaceship well outside of a massive
: object's gravitational influence. Cortana should know this...

But you just described gravity as a warping of spacetime! Surely my ship's acceleration does NOT warp spacetime. Gravity is one thing, inertia is another. GET IT RIGHT!

: and the "field" may not have to be artificial -- Halo's position at
: Lagrange1, coupled with use of exotic matter in the ring structure, and
: with rotation tossed in for good measure, could do the trick without
: really invoking "new" physics, just very clever use of what is
: already known. the Forerunner(s) were clever, if nothing else.

Oh how bright you are. Too bad FoR already stated the existence of 'artificially created gravity' on the ring world.
