at the risk of belaboring a point: "natural" gravity is a consequence of the warping/bending/reshaping of spacetime by mass. other matter moving through this bent spacetime accelerates (can be positive or negative, i.e., speeding up or slowing down), and the percieved effects of this acceleration are what we term "gravity." the only way to warp spacetime enough to generate a gravity well with an acceleration of 1G is with a mass equivalent to that of the earth (doesn't have to be that size, however -- white dwarf stars & neutron stars are made of exotic forms of matter that pack a sh!tload of mass into a relatively small space). however, there's lots of ways to create an acceleration which would be perceived as "gravity." rotation is one way, but so's putting the pedal to the metal in your terrestrial ICE vehicle (which causes fractional G forces at right angles to Earth's "natural" gravity, and may earn you a ticket ;-} ). then again, use of exotic states of matter (see above) in advanced technology could perhaps cause a local warping of space that could be a "synthetic" gravity. : When the Spartans first board a Covie ship: ---

that's always bothered me -- personally, i thinks it's a big continuity break on Bungie's part (perhaps even an "intentional goof"), but it also makes the game more playable. trying to fight in zero G would be incredibly fun but also incredibly disorienting. i'm willing to put up with a few rounded corners... : Finally, my most-used quote ever... : Cortana: "Captain, the object is clearly artificial. There's a gravity
: The wording of that statement certainly implies that the "gravity
problem is, gravity isn't a field, it's a consequence of the shape of spacetime. near a large mass, that shape causes an acceleration toward the center of the mass. we call this "gravity," but it's really no different than the acceleration of a spaceship well outside of a massive object's gravitational influence. Cortana should know this... and the "field" may not have to be artificial -- Halo's position at Lagrange1, coupled with use of exotic matter in the ring structure, and with rotation tossed in for good measure, could do the trick without really invoking "new" physics, just very clever use of what is already known. the Forerunner(s) were clever, if nothing else. |
