I'll agree that, for the most part, games don't seem to marry mechanics with narratives very well, but there are exceptions. Innistrad, for Magic: The Gathering married mechanics with the story quite well. Now, the story is non-linear, so perhaps that's a part of the equation. Interactivity is not very linear, which is quite different from the way stories have been created for centuries. Perhaps in order for a video game to have a truly unique narrative we cannot get elsewhere, this weakness must be turned into a strength. I dislike such a simplified equation because all I need is a single counter-example to prove it wrong.
