In Response To: Re: Bungie responds to Activision contract. (Cody Miller) : This is what I mean. If everyone here were to name a video game they feel : 'starts a conversation' or otherwise takes a stance on an issue or : whatever, I can find a book or film that does it orders of magnitude : better. However, pick a good film or book and try to find a game that : outclasses it, and you will come up empty every time. See... art can't be judged universally. People interpret and experience different things in different ways. For example, I could play your 'game' above and state an example. You can come back and state a book or film. Then I can simply disagree. What happens then? Just because you don't get anything out of games with stories doesn't mean that's the same for everyone. I have read many books, seen many movies, and played many games. And there are things in some games that I've never experienced in any other medium because of its unique aspect of interactivity. I have read Dostoyevsky novels that have delved deeply into the phycology of a man and been blow away, and I've also played Final Fantasy VII whose story also explores the troubled psychology of an individual and again, been blown away. Both mediums had their own unique ways of doing this and both experiences were unique. One impressed different emotions, ideas, and ways of thinking upon me that the other could not, and vice versa. If you removed the 'game' from FFVII, it would have been nowhere near as magical, but adding that extra dimension that a game can provide, it becomes something more - something unique - something that a movie, book, or comic can't provide. You are able to move and exist within the world, interact with it and change it... and then it reacted to me.
