From my perspective, the nature of the human-formed Smart AI combined with the nature of the activated Forerunner artifact while in slipspace (also entirely fictional, btw, explain that :) could produce who knows what unknown un-natural space/time effects. This is sci-fi, yo. mix real science with fantasy to produce somewhat feasible results, then let your mind just accept it :).

More like unexpectedly ripped through time, connected only by the wormhole. Smart AIs, generally, can copy themselves, or pieces of themselves, willingly... here Melissa's existence was projected to two places(though perhaps the same 'place')/times simultaneously due to the effect of the Forerunner artifact. In 2552, she landed on Earth, disoriented but connecting with Jersey (subconsciously chosen due to the nature of her human origin child), while here in 2004 the pieces of her 'subconscious' code layers became 'unsynchronized' and effectively combatants squaring off against each other (the SPDR, the 'sleeping princess' and the 'queen' - different parts of Melissa's conscience) and a piece of viral Covenant code (the 'flea'). Thus the metaphor of being 'made whole' - in the end, the flea was destroyed and the layers of her conscious were fixed here, and the artifact re-activated returning these pieces to the rest of her in 2552. Along with the memories of 2004, like a 'dream'. In short, ILB implied that the nature of the Smart AI flashed from human subjects is very complex psychologically... the 'new' stuff was proposing what might happen if a forerunner artifact (this one still unexplained and unknown) were activated in slipspace, and what might happen to a Smart AI in the vicinity of this rare sequence of events. I'd like to see that addressed more if ILB is officially canon :) : That makes even less sense. heh, as you said: "It's cool, what more justification do you need?"
