nooooooo... nothing physical went back in time. The idea was that a wormhole-type effect occurred between the Apocalypso when the forerunner artifact was activated, and the way I tend to describe it is like stretching the AI Melissa like an elastic band through the wormhole into 2004, as long as the artifact was 'enabled'. Thus the AI here was thinly connected to the AI in 2552 - separated in a sense, effectively 'broken'. When the artifact was re-activated, the AI was returned entirely to 2552, 'made whole' again.
That's one unique element of forerunner artifacts introduced in ILB which I hope is considered in future fiction, if ILB is indeed canon.

Not Spartan II's - James James and Gilly and some others in the story were 1.0's (theoretically, ORION program). the "1.1"s (an affectionate name, not really official) were their kids, also slightly genetically enhanced.
This is another reason I think there's some animosity to the ILB story - not enough people really know what happened or how it ties in to existing Halo canon. They grey nature of its content has always been nebulous to hardcore Halo fans I think, so it's been left on the backburner.
I'd love to see 343 somehow deal with this now official canonizing of the ILB story, and how it really fits in with the greater picture!
