Dude, MST3K mantra. MST3K mantra! I could poke holes in how the Halo canon doesn't make sense all day, but I won't. If anything I usually try to spend time justifying things like the Scorpion tank. There was a link to the torrent for the DVD of the entire ILB thing here a few months back. Seriously, listen to it. What it doesn't make sense in purely technical aspects, it makes up for with understand its story and how to fit something within the Halo universe without majorly disrupting the canon.
