In Response To: Re: Halo: From A to Z with Frank O'Connor (Archilen)

: That, and Glasslands makes tons of outright wrong assumptions about Halsey
: and her intentions and presents them as facts. According to Traviss, the
: SPARTAN-IIs were Halsey's private project she created out of curiosity,
: like a hobby. This is entirely ignoring the fact the ONI brass
: commissioned the whole thing.

Since when have being curious in the outcome of something and getting funding for it been mutually exclusive?

: Everyone else involved - including the
: people who did it all over again in the Spartan-III project - gets a free
: pass, or a couple of lines about them being bad or immoral, but then
: Traviss is back to bashing Halsey.

Agreed.

: Now, I have no problem with acknowledging that what she did was wrong; this
: was already done in the previous novels. But do we need to be reminded of
: it every other sentence, and does every character need to be turned into a
: vessel of rancid hatred against her? There's a point when it becomes clear
: that the author is either unable or unwilling to present an alternate
: viewpoint because she has a personal problem with this fictional
: character. And that is not something you expect to see in a book written
: by a professional writer, but an awkward wish-fulfillment fic written by
: an angry fan instead.

This I'll agree with.

: Besides, regardless of the original reasons for the program, the Spartans did
: end up saving humanity. In the eyes of post-war humans, shouldn't that
: have some weight to it? But apparently not, since the characters seem like
: they appeared into the setting out of thin air - or their minds were
: hijacked by an author with delusions of grandeur.

Hey, kiddies! You know what the Nazis gave us? Lots of lovely data on the following!
Hypothermia.
Malaria immunization.
The effectiveness of Sulfonamide.
Treatments for phosphorus burns.
Effects of phosgene on humans.

Did you know that we could save lives if we use their data? Did you know that, despite the intent and some questionable methodology, the data on phosgene and hypothermia is the best we have? Did you know that, despite the live-saving applications of their work, the doctors who ran these experiments were utter monsters?'

So, uh... no. Given all the information about the origins of the Spartans, I don't think a lot of people would sympathize with Halsey.
