Why would anyone optimizing their K/D pass up the opportunity to put a shot on the opponent? The only reason to do so would be to protect your own life. Take the teammate out of this situation. You see an opponent across the map? Do you shoot? In deciding to take this shot, the golden question is always asked: "Will I die if I engage?" I can see no reason that would discourage this shot unless your life was in immediate danger, in which case it's a good idea to preserve your life. Your scenario suggests that this player would not opt to take this shot in the interest of preserving his/her own life at the expense of his teammate. But how different is the player's reaction whether or not there is a teammate involved? Any shot on the opponent is a chance to maximize your kills, you can't ever tell for certain how weak that opponent is, if all you can squeeze off is one shot, and it doesn't threaten your life to do so, then the pros of taking this shot far outweigh the cons: 1. I take the shot, I get a kill (+1) In the solo scenario, the only reasonable case where the player would opt not to take the shot is when his life is in immediate danger, and preserving it needs immediate attention. In both the solo and teammate scenario, the choice to preserve your life is in everyone's best interest; that is, if you do not give your immediate attention to your mortality, you will die and net a -1. If his life is not in immediate danger, (and in your scenario, it is not; the opponent is simply on his radar), then there is no reasonable motivation to opt not to take this shot; teammate or not, there's a chance to net +1 (see point 1.).
