In Response To: Why arena ranking promotes selfish play (Cody Miller) Minimizing your own deaths and minimizing your team's deaths are not mutually exclusive. Could you provide me a scenario where your teammate is about to die and you choose to do nothing about it because of this perceived divergence of goals? In all cases, there are two options: 1. Get involved and kill, or assist in killing, the opponent threatening your teammate.
It almost sounds obvious what should be done here, but it isn't. What makes a good player choose between these two options? For the K/D oriented, risk of his/her own death. For the Team oriented player, also risk of his/her own death. Killing the opponent and saving your teammate maximizes your kills, this goal, as you point out, is good for the whole team. But sometimes, opting not to help is the best choice, as helping can put you at great risk of death. This also helps your team. There are a few outcomes here: 1. You save your teammate, and kill the opponent. (net team gain of +1)
For the Team oriented player, Option 3 must be avoided at all costs. To avoid Option 3, you need to engage in mortality calculus: "Will I or will I not die if I pursue?" If you remove the fact that a teammate is in danger in this scenario, the thought process is still the same as someone who is K/D oriented. This question of mortality is central to practically every FPS, and is arguably the absolute most important tenant of these kinds games. Preserving your life optimally is good for you, and it's good for your team. I see no instance where doing so doesn't benefit your team. I don't see how someone optimizing their K/D can possibly do so at the detriment of their team? If every player is successful in optimizing their K/D, then that team will undoubtedly win.
