In Response To: What if the Covenant AI was Cortana? *Long* (Schedonnardus) : All this data from Halo's control room may have also given her the key to her
If anything will make Cortana immortal it'll be the duplication program she found in the Covenant A.I. In First Strike, when she says that the used the very dark and mysterious program, she claims it happened much quicker than she had expected, but she didn't stop it because it was far too interesting to stop. She says that it was like glancing into something immortal. Now, we know that a "smart" A.I. will only last so long because at its very core irreparable errors will form over its lifespan which will stop it from being able to function properly. These errors are formed because of how much a smart A.I. thinks, literally making itself think to death. When Cortana was looking at the replication algorithm, she commented on how much of the A.I. memory it was taking up, and how she counldn't make any sense of it. This dark and mysterious code was what had been keeping the A.I. functioning. The A.I. seemed as though it had been duplicated several times before, which didn't make sense to Cortana because a "smart" A.I. would still only last 7 years regardless, since the errors in its code would be copied as well. However it would make sense if the duplication code itself replaced the A.I.'s core, which would reprogram the A.I. into acting in the Covenant's best interest, if it was indeed a captured human A.I. This would explain why Cortana commented on how there had to be a balance between the Covenant A.I.'s spastic rambling and Cortana's own mental degradation. The black replication software wasn't perfect since it had many errors in it, but Cortana's errors couldn't be compensated for but it would seem as though the errors in the Covenant A.I. existed, but its black core took care of it. The Covenant A.I. was still functioning, while Cortana was processing things much slower than she was used to. Just my thoughts on how Cortana could reach immortality. It would be interesting if Cortana never dumped the Covenant A.I. from her memory and now with Gravemind's assistance, could somehow reach a sort of A.I. enlightenment. |
