: The comparison doesn't hold. What if you invent a better mousetrap, and show
: it to your friend, and say "well, shucks, I'm never going to do
: anything with this, but isn't it keen?" what right have you to
: complain if he does something with it, eh?

Agreed... history is full of this type of one-upmanship.

What if we found out that some professor of German physics decided to show some cool equation and nuclear theorems to some bright-eyed bushy-haired kid named Einstein... but said "nothing will ever come of it..."

My god... look at Cheese as a good example and wine for that matter. Cheeses are made by all kinds of people in all kinds of places and with all kinds of ingredients... but almost all cheese is built upon the same principle of milk and bacteria forming a pasteurized product for consumption... and wine is all grapes (or other fruits) set to ferment with yeast added in... but each winery does it in a different way, with different percentages of ingredients... some in oak barrels.. some in giant vats...

Food is kind of a bad example... but also a good one.. if only to show diversity along the same lines.

I think we have pretty much established that you can take an idea and make it something different... as long as you put in the work to do so. If you come along and take an idea that has been transformed by someone else... and claim that you also have transformed it and happened to come to the same result... then that is wrong.

In the world of science... it isn't yours if you don't publish it. You could invent the better mouse trap... but if Ludwig von Mouser publishes it in Sweden 2 days before you get your copy into popular science... then you are screwed as far as credit... unless of course you had some other sort of collaborative proof... but I digress.
