That was perhaps one of the simplest high-level descriptions of what happened. I recommend reading some of the non-biased articles that have been written on the subject of the Xerox PARC project and the basic MacOS.

The GUI used by pretty much every computer on this planet (yes, this includes the many incarnations of XWindows for you Linux gurus) is based on the preliminary research and development of the PARC project.

And your example of how Gates "stole" the GUI is nearly the same as the following analogy:


Let's say Henry Ford was the inventor of the car (he wasn't, but let's assume this is true for the purpose of this example), a Mustang, let's say. Now, the CEO of Chevrolet hires away some of Ford's designers/workers, pays them a truckload more money than they were making with Ford, and this worker goes on to design the Corvette.

Now, tell me... did the CEO of Chevrolet "steal" the idea of the car? Four wheels and an engine? Does he lack morals for his actions? Of course not. This is what we call business, and entry into competitive markets based on the demand for products (in Gates' case, a viable operating system for the oh-so-many x86-based processors in the market) is one of the most basic principles of economics.

Now, don't get me wrong PCDestroyer... I don't have anything against you. In fact, I like a lot of the things you have to say, but on this issue, you seem to have taken a break from an even slightly objective point-of-view. I like Macs too (hell, my mac is 4x more powerful than the PC I use), but I don't have a vigilate streak in me that prohibits me from looking at both sides of the fence.
