In Response To: Re: Halo Wars=NOT a Bad Game, COMPLETELY Canon (Cody Miller) : Sometimes I wonder why Marathon's story was so intriguing. Then I remember it : was because there were no encyclopedias, no graphic novels, no books, no : bestiaries, no animes, no film adaptations, and no radio dramas or ARGs, : but just us, our deductive powers, imaginations, and Hamish Sinclair. : Less is more. This is more or less one of my observations re: ODST. And I think I may have touched on it in a previous thread here on the forum. Sadie's Story and the Firefly cast detract from our attempts to wrap ourselves up in the story because if the voice acting for some reason doesn't jibe with what we expect then we're made aware of us playing a game. The what I will call 'accidental' genius of Marathon is that the wordy terminals let us fill in our own mind's best characterizations/inflections/quirks we would want the story to adopt. Certainly I don't think the voice I heard in my head for Durandal in any way matches what you or anyone else did. This position of less 'spreading of the wings' kind of goes out the window when you look at Myth 1&2, which did have voice over narration and even some slick Nirvana animation, but maybe that's just more about how perfectly the music/voice/animation fit w/ the medieval fantasy genre Myth lived in. Us playing the role of 'God' helped as well, since there was no implied need to place ourselves *within* the cut scenes, etc., Whatever the case I just know that in ODST it didn't really make it 100% with me. Maybe more like 80% Still, I think it's pretty cool.
