In Response To: Re: Lol you're funny (Avateur) Are you saying that only things created by Bungie are considered official Canon? Why is it that they are able to take "original" story's from and convert them into games? (I apologize If I am confused with what you are saying here.) It may have been their universe to begin with, but my point is that it's not theirs anymore, and I guarantee 343 or MS at the very least got a outline of the bible sufficient enough to create media with. Don't forget Frankie most likely has a very intimate knowledge of the bible, due to his position at Bungie before he left for MS. My point is the Bungie Story Bible isn't just for Bungie anymore-it's 343's, Microsoft's, AND Bungie's bible, and I think that there was always gaps in the Bible, due to the Nature of the story. May I direct you to the Legendary Edition of Halo 3 and the cutscene DVD commentary: Jason Jones, at one point said that the original plan for the end of Halo 2 was having Miranda strap a bomb to MC's back. They do joke around with that idea, but the point was it was in the bible, or at the very least considered to be in the bible. I really don't think that "suspension of reality" is an acceptable answer to a canon question. Why are gameplay mechanics ignored (not conformable) by canon? Why should they be? I have no doubt that if the gauntlets on MC's suit were the same between Halo 2 and Halo 3, then there would have been no change to the gameplay. It would have been easy to not let an ODST carry a turret. Would your opinion of the game change if you wouldn't have been able to carry a turret? How much fun did that introduce? The only time I can think where I even took a turret off was in Crater's firefight against drones, and only because I wanted to see how fast I could actually run. How many times have you pulled off a turret and had a radically different gameplay experience from it? Now think if you, as an ODST, were unable to take a turret off of a stand, or at the very least, been unable to jump, would it have changed the game that much? The thing I am saying is that without a full copy of the Bible, we can't say anything not produced by Bungie is not canonical in any way-because we don't actually know if there is a reasonable explanation in Bungie's version or whatever version 343/MS has. Like I said, things that cannot be explained have traditionally been explained later games or sources of canon (interviews, etc.) And I want to make sure you know where I'm coming from: I understand you saying that the Bungie bible is the "end-all, be-all" of Halo story canon. I would have completely agreed with you prior to 7/7/07. But as soon as Bungie lost possession of the IP, then they don't get to decide what becomes canon and what is not aside from what they make. Ensemble's game is completely canon with the story bible that governs the IP today. So I guess that is where we differ: I believe anything produced under the MS/343 label is canonical based on my belief MS/343 has a comprehensive canonical story bible, where you believe that anything produced by or sanctioned by Bungie is all that matters in the canon argument, correct? And it is true, I do have faith in MS, but that's mostly grounded in people like Frankie over at 343. P.S. Yay for Bungie getting marathon back! Brings back memories of M:I on the first generation Power Mac! (At least I think it was a Power Mac, It may have been a 7200 or something like that. And yes, My parents let me play Marathon at the age of 9, lol)
