In Response To: Re: Lol you're funny (Avateur)
: Pretty much what I'm saying is that until 343 actually starts producing its
: own games, whatever Bungie has done is canon and should remain as canon
: after the fact (unless things are changed in a logical, reasonable
: manner--which then leads to what is logical and reasonable. See two
: sentences down). That's why I said in an earlier post that we may have to
: break things into "Bungie Canon" and "Microsoft Canon"
: depending on how conflicting each is with one another. If 343 goes and
: makes Halo 4 and Master Chief is suddenly named George and is Spartan-999,
: then we would obviously have an extreme issue regarding what's already
: "set in stone" and what they did with it. I feel that Halo Wars
: conflicts with many things, and considers events like slipspace travel to
: be instant and even appears to portray them as such.
I guess I misunderstood, then. I pretty much completely agree with the fact that everything Bungie does is, and always should be, considered canon. I just think that there is a logical explanation in "new" canon for the things in Halo Wars you are describing, and while some things could appear to people as non-canon, I think that we just kind of have to assume it is canon until told otherwise, because we don't know for sure. But I see why someone would not accept this.
: Not even the turret, but the missile pod and Spartan Laser. I love using
: those things as an ODST, and they definitely added to the fun. NMPD is a
: prime example of that stuff. "For fun" can be a very good
: reason. You're also forgetting that I can flip Elephants and Scorpions as
: Master Chief, and that I can flip Scorpions as ODSTs as well. Gameplay
: doesn't equate to canon in every instance.
The missile pod is an interesting case. Due to the little it appears in campaign (I think 2 levels in H3 and 1 in ODST?) It's hard to make a overall decision on if it is acceptable for the ODST to be able to pick it up in my eyes. As for the Laser, I don't see any problem for a marine to hold it. It is just as large as a rocket launcher, and probably weighs less. And I don't like how we can flip vehicles as an ODST with the same ease as a Spartan. As an ODST, if a tank flips, you should be fucked. The Warthog, If all three ODST's/Marines did a cool little animation to pick it up, I could believe that. And as for the elephant, I think the message that appears speaks for itself. I understand based on the game engine it has to be able to do that, but I would have liked to see a Mako-type ability to stay upright the whole time. It would just make more sense.
: And here's the tricky part of my argument and yours. I agree with you when it
: comes to the fact that the IP is now owned by Microsoft, but the fact that
: Bungie is still making Halo games says that they still are the authority
: in the Greater Halo Universe. H1-H3 was set in stone by them. ODST? Them.
: Reach? Them. Sure, MS owns the IP, but until that torch has been handed
: off to 343 officially, I feel that Halo Wars and many other non-Bungie
: items can be highly scrutinized and even disregarded as canon depending on
: just how many errors there are. I have extreme faith in Frankie and 343,
: but wouldn't it suck if Bungie made Reach, didn't tell Frankie or anyone
: at 343 what they had planned, and then 343 released a game a year later
: that completely contradicted many events Bungie portrayed? I would have to
: say that 343's would be entirely discounted.
I agree with all of this but the word "disregarded". I think that enough care was put into the game to pretty much guarantee that that nothing would have to be thrown out, but not everything is scrutinizing-proof (that is really a stretch to make a word there,) just like there are some confusing aspects in H1-3 + ODST.
: Naturally this won't happen, but if in the future 343 were to make a game,
: and within that game they decided they really hated some of Bungie's
: decisions in prior games (and thus decided to retcon big time), I'd either
: discount it all or call it "Microsoft Canon" now that Bungie is
: officially out of the "Halo Game Business" and on to their new
: IP. Frankie and 343 will have their chance to shine (or flicker out of
: existence), but until Bungie backs away from kicking so much ass and
: setting the standard (and the canon), regardless of who owned what as of
: when, the story is set by Bungie.
Ok, I see what you are getting at there. But I don't believe MS/343 will get rid of any Bungie canon, so I don't think we have to worry about it.
