: But what about the proposed voting idea that's been thrown around? If
: everyone sees what the match is ahead of time, they can vote yea or nay,
: and then the system will throw up another gametype. IIRC, the proposed
: idea would only let you do this once, to prevent the players from never
: deciding, or from only playing what they wanted to play.

: I think that would cut down a lot on quitters.

Would it? I think it would just mean that the people who lost the vote would quit.

: Advertised customs really just doesn't sit well with me. I like the system as
: it is, because everyone in your custom game will either have only one or
: two degrees of seperation from the host, which IMO makes them less likely
: to be jerks. Not that someone won't have a kick button, but you see what
: I'm saying. If you want to play with new people, you can always run into
: them in matchmaking and then invite them to your custom games later.
: Advertising customs on a server list is just giving griefers a list of
: games that are available for them to go into and harass people.

This is true, but you don't HAVE to do the advertised-customs thing. If you do, then, yeah, you're opening yourself up to griefers (but the griefers are going to go somewhere, unfortunately, so that hardly seems like an argument against any one system). Plus, these wouldn't be ranked, so you would have fewer people griefing/quitting for rank purposes (cheating, deleveling, etc.).

: Add to that the fact that you will undoubtedly see the same maps and
: gametypes on a server list over and over, and you have a near-perfect
: recipe for not-fun.

: Counter-strike has Dust, UT has Facing Worlds, Halo PC has Blood Gulch, etc.
: etc.

This is the problem, as I see it. On the one hand, there will definitely be some popular map(s) (blood gulch 3) and gametype(s) (slayer) that dominate advertised customs. On the other hand, matchmaking is created precisely to avoid this problem (by enforcing a rotation of maps). So, the idea behind advertised customs (when they exist alongside private games and traditional matchmaking) is that the people who are playing matchmaking because they don't have enough friends (online at the moment) to play a private game with but are quitting from matchmaking because they only like certain maps/gametypes will go to the advertised customs.

As long as there are enough people playing to maintain both advertised customs and matchmaking, having both seems like a really good solution.
