I finally managed to ween myself off of this forum about 18 months ago (it was just taking up too much of my life!). But now I have finally finished Halo2 I find myself inexorably drawn back in - a moth to the flame.

I have a theory that Bungie watch these forums for cool storyline ideas because I am sure that the whole Halo2 story was pre-empted on this very forum some time ago. The Ark storyline was particularly well explored.

Anyway, back to topic.

There is a Bungie Covenant beastiary somewhere (I think it is on the Bungie site) which has a fair amount of detail about the background of the various species in the covenant and their relationship to eachother. Essentially, the original covenant was between the prophets and the elites. The prophets (with the aid of the engineers) discover and understand the nature of forerunner relics, the elites protect the prophets in return for access to the forerunner technology.

The Brutes covet the Elites position in the covenant heirarchy and are keen to usurp them by means fair or foul. I believe there has been some kind of dodgy deal made between some prophets and the brutes to help bring this change of policy about - this is where the story begins, with the brutes and prophets happily conspiring, accusing and publicly punishing Arby for the loss of Halo.

I suspect that our elite heros transition into Arbiter was planned well in advance, and Arbys mission to kill the heretic is a smoke screen to recover the oracle. Once the prophets have the oracle they discover the true nature of the Halos and understand the need to return to Earth in order to activate them.

Grunts and Jackals just fall in line when the shit hits the fan. The Hunters are a little more complex, but ultimately their outlook, and culture is more aligned with Elites than Brutes.

What I still want to know is...why have the covenant decided to wage a war of annihilation against humanity when they have such an obvious history of forming pacts (covenants) with other alien species?

There must be some history here...
