Wrong. The elites eliminate the heretic threat, and Tartarus steals the credit for retrieving the oracle, though he was most likely ordered to so that no other elites would rebel. Next, the prophet of regret is killed by the demon, and is failed by his Red Gaurd Elites. Because of this failure, along with the original halo, the elites are stripped of their title as the Red Gaurd, or gaurdians of the Prophets. The brutes, being less honorable and more malicious, are seen as undeserving in the elite's eyes, and to further worsen conditions, the brutes cause trouble among the elites. The mistreatment of elites increases rapidly, until the brutes steal the index and are ordered, by the prophet of truth (possibly others) to kill the arbiter. This will then cripple any form of galvanizing leadership the elites may have. However, the gravemind foils their plan by saving The Arbiter, and returning him to the front lines. At this time the Prophet(s?) plan is underway, and the brutes are massacreing the elites. The elites, due to their protector - protected relationship, have easily garnered the aid of the grunts, while the brutes, being endorsed by the prophets, have the aid of the jackals, drones, and hunters. (In the mission "Gravemind" Hunters are helping brutes.) Now, The Arbiter is well on his path of Brute destruction, and is to the point that he has regrouped with the Spec Ops elite (What appears to be the leader of the elite forces on Delta Halo) who has apparently accquired the aid of the hunters on Delta Halo. Together, the Elite forces on Delta Halo save Johnson, and in a partnership with Johnson and Miranda save all life by defeating the Brute Chieftan Tartarus and deactivating the halo. Meanwhile, Truth with his gaurd of brutes has continued onward towards earth, tailed by The Master Chief while in possesion of the index. Truth now remains the only living Prophet of the Tripod that once supported the counsel, while not being flood infested. (Regret is visually confirmed as infested while Mercy is most likely revived in flood form as well.) There you have it. The linear recounting of the Covenants breaking.
