Ok I'm just gonna tackle these all in the order they are in in the original post.

The one big happy family thing does not seem likely to me. It would make more sense that, like when any theocracy rises to power, there were those against it from the beginning, among them was "The Heretic." I think he may have been someone who questioned the Covenant system, and came across 343GS (evidence, Limited Edition DVD booklet Conversations from the Universe), who validated, or reinforced, his suspicions. The whole arbiter angainst his fellow species seems like what the Nazi party was capable of doing with Germans, killing their countrymen in the name of something greater. The prophets giving the elites the oust seems like it may have been in the making longer than we see in the game. In Conversations from the Universe, it is hinted that the brutes were using subversive tactics, and rumors to put the elites out of their jobs. I think the replacement was engineerd by Tartarus and his band of Merry Men rather than the prophets. The elites turn on the covenant as any disposessed class of society in an theocratic, patriotist, facist state would. This is especially true of a class held in such high regard as the elites. I think that the Hunters' joining the elites in rebellion has more to do with their inherent loyalty to their superiors, sort of a canine devotion thing (possibly due to their being made of worms). Tartarus believed he was being loyal when he activated the Halo. In his mind activating the ring was probably the last necessary action of proving the brute loyalty to the prophets. So there you have it. My analysis of the situation. Reply, send an email my way, whatever. I would love to hear what you think of my take on things.
