In Response To: Ok, but that doesn't explain these confusing parts (Key Lime) : Someone, please answer these questions for me... : #1: If you want to achieve The Great Journey, why even bother attacking
I apologize ahead of time if some of my following thoughts are not organized in an easy to follow manner, as I'm kind of rushed at the moment and don't have a lot of time to do so. They're attacking Earth because Earth is the Ark, and according to their religion, the Ark will see them safely through (a great journey?) the Flood (see Noah's Ark in the Bible). The Ark (Earth) is likely at a position in the galaxy that will be unaffected by the activation of the Halo installations, or it is protected in some way not yet revealed. : #2 Why does Regret go to Earth in the first place, and then why does he leave
He went to Earth because Earth is the Ark. He was looking to start the "Great Journey" early, and went to Earth to do it, knowing that on the Ark (Earth) he would be safe. He went with a small fleet because he did not expect anyone to be there and was surprised to find humans (Forerunners [I'll get back to this, but yes, I think Humans = Forerunners]) already occupied the Ark. : #3: What is that big fleet assembling above the second Halo for (the part
Knowing now, because of Regrets *ahem* regretful actions, that Humans are on the Ark, they assemble the fleet to attack Earth in order to remove us and take posession of the Ark so they can survive the activation of the Halo installations, and thus the Flood. : #4: Why does Truth go back to Earth at the end of the game and not to the
Because he knows Tartarus is going to activate the Halo installations, and the Ark (Earth) is the only safe place in the Galaxy. : #5: Why did the original poster call Gravemind by the name of Audrey? Because the original poster is a genius, and was making a reference to the large venus fly-trap like plant in the Little Shop of Horrors named Audrey II. The Gravemind basically looks like Audrey II's big brother. : These are the aspects that still confuse me. Anyway, my theory is that Humans are the Forerunners. Thousands of years ago (perhaps millions?) Humans (the Forerunners) explored the galaxy just as we're doing in the present time (in the Halo universe) and somewhere along the way we encountered the Flood. We built the Halo installations to study and contain the Flood... fearing that we wouldn't be successful we built them with the ability to activate and destroy all sentient life in the galaxy in order to stop the spread of the Flood. However, knowing that this would mean our own extinction, we created a safehaven, an Ark (Earth) where we could go should the Halo installations ever need to be activated. Well, we weren't successful, and we activated the Halo installations (as 343 GS states was done on one occassion)... All of us die. Except those of us stationed on the Ark (Earth). The Flood is stopped. We rejoice. Supporting quotes from the story would be mostly from 343 GS... in the Library he says he's happy to see that some of us survived to reproduce. It was unclear whether he was talking about the Flood or the Forerunners or what, I believe he was speaking of the Forerunners (Humans). He recognizes humans (MC, Miranda, Mobuto(?)) as what he calls a Reclaimer. Reclaiming what? Reclaiming our (Forerunners) previous places in the galaxy, perhaps. It's obvious humans are needed to activate the Halo installations, Tartarus didn't drag Miranda along with him for nothing... remember, he had to force her to use the index. Why? Probably because the Forerunners designed the installations so they could only be activated by someone with human DNA, just in case some crazy alien nuts decided to use them as a weapon. 343 GS, while in the Pillar of Autumn, says something like "I can't believe you would destroy this record, all of our lost time..." lost time? whose lost time? ours? Humans/Forerunners? Why "lost time"? Perhaps because Forerunners = Humans, it's a record of the last several thousand (million?) years that the Forerunners missed out on. Also in the books, MC seems to 'recognize' some of the controls on Halo, things feel familiar, almost second nature to him. Just seems to further strengthen the connection between humans and Forerunner. Anyway, bottom line, the Forerunner were the highly advanced ancestors of the present day humans who were forced (due to the Flood) to activate the Halos and wipe themselves out in order to protect the Ark (the single safehaven they had) from succumbing to the Flood. Somewhere along the way, after the activation of the Halo installations, the Prophets found some ancient Forerunner installation (not a Halo) with information about the Halo installations the Flood and the Ark. They built a religious following around this information and created the Covenant. Then they encountered the Flood. The Flood threatened to wipe out the Covenant, and so they made it top priority to find any and all remaining Forerunner installations to get as much information as they could, and especially to locate the Halo installations and the Ark, so they could use them to stop the Flood and survive just as the Forerunners did in the past. So why didn't the Covenant know where our home world was, and that our home world, Earth, was the very Ark they were searching for? Probably because the Forerunners instituted a system similar to the Cole Protocol that the humans use now, in order to prevent the location of the Ark from being revealed to the Flood. All information about the whereabouts of the Ark were erased. Only the Forerunners already living there would have that information. |
