Indeed, that's the other possibility I had thought of.

That's certainly possible and, in retrospect, seems to be ringing all the right bells. I've only played through once thus far so the script hasn't been entirely engrained into my mind as of yet. :)

That's what I had originally thought as well. Even taken this way, how would he/she/it be a monument of even the Forerunner's sins? Taken another way, what sins is Gravemind a monument to? The ignition of the Halo life-wiping network or something else entirely? Is The Flood itself a Forerunner creation?

On a completely different tangent, with regard to the purpose of the Halo network, there seems to be somewhat ambiguous information regarding its purpose. In Halo 1, 343 mentions, and I paraphrase, that the installation was designed to study and contain The Flood. However, later we learn that it is designed to destroy all life and thus prevent The Flood's spread. Nothing ambiguous here, but what bothers me is why is it that at every Forerunner installation that we visit that The Flood is present? Shouldn't they have been wiped out along with all other life in the galaxy? Indeed, on Halo 05 it appears to thrive. Who released The Flood on Installation 05? Why is it that, if the Flood changes its environment as it spreads (as evidenced by a comment by 343 GS in Halo 1 and later in Halo 2 by the effects The Flood had on High Charity) that Halo 05's environment was NOT likewise affected? Perhaps to conceal the presence of The Flood?
