Well, here's a "what if" that's been rettling around in my head for a couple of days:

Note that I'm assuming that Humans are descended from Forerunner and that Earth is the Ark.

What if the Ark could only protect a small area of earth from the Halos being fired? The Ark could have been designed to protect a small population sample that would evetually reseed the galaxy after the cleansing. So the Flood escape again(?), the Halos are fired, whamo! cataclysmic events wipe out all life on Earth except the small population protected by the Ark. The firing of the Halos perhaps rendered much of the Forerunner tech on Earth inoperable or inaccessable. So Humans spend the next 100,000 odd years clawing their way back from the edge with only vague legends and genetic memories of their Forerunner past.

And then we get to the Master Chief and his almost instinctual feeling for Forerunner tech.

OK, now let's wander off into real wild-eyed speculation. If all life, save the small sample of humans preserved on Earth, was wiped out where'd the Prophets and Elites and so on come from, hmmm?

What if Earth wasn't the only Ark? Not to say there's another "master trigger" elsewhere, the Forerunners gave the other races bomb shelters, not the keys to the gun cabinet.But, what if the Forerunners also preserved samples of some of their client races? And maybe one of those client races came off a bit better than the Humans after the firing of the rings.

Say, maybe, the Prophets.

Maybe they had easier access to Forerunner tech, the memories stayed a little clearer and over time got twisted into the current Covenant religion. Kind of "The Forerunner left in the cleansing light of the Holy Rings, and we weren't good enough to go, so we need to find all their stuff and then we can light off the rings and follow them on the Great Journey".

It'd kind of explain why the Humans weren't offered a chance to join the Covenant. They're debased Forerunner who weren't good enough to join their fellows on the Great Journey, so they're obviously impure and must be destroyed.

*Shrug* Like I said, just kinda a "what if", and it's got holes you could drive High Charity through. But it's kind of a fun line of thought.
