In Response To: Re: A record of all OUR lost time. *SP* (Gravemind) : After Halo 3 and especially Contact Harvest, it was pretty much a given that : Human=Forerunner. Whether that was Bungie's intent is unknown. 343I, : however, apparently decided it was more interesting to muddy the waters by : giving us Cryptum, which is far as I'm aware of is the first piece of Halo : fiction to unambiguously treat humans and Forerunners as separate species. Bungie's Dave Candland (Evil Otto) came here and explicitly told us that Humans and Forerunners were the same. One of the most striking retcons to me is the basic concept of whole role of humanity. Originally (back in Halo 1) the reason why humans weren't conquered and incorporated into the Covenant collective was because their presence defied Covenant religion. When the Covenant discovered humans, they knew they were forerunners, but their presence implied the "great journey" failed. They also weren't the all powerful gods they worshiped, so the Prophets wanted to "sweep them under the carpet," as it were. As you said 343i have muddied the waters. Instead of creating new story they have dragged out the old one. This is what happened to The X Files and is why I don't care so much anymore about canon or what the story is supposed to be. Anything said can be unsaid so any effort made to comprehend the story could be wasted. I rarely speculate about the Halo story and even when I do its with seriously less enthusiasm. But the most interesting thing is that most people appear to have forgotten that we have been told, unambiguously, that the original, Bungie, intent was that Humans == Forerunners. Essentially they are in denial and I expect them to forget this reminder, say in a couple of hours after reading this post - or maybe they will forget immediately after moving on to another post. Peoples' capacity for intellectual dishonesty and denial is staggering and cannot be overestimated. Shame on anyone who 'forgets' again.
