In Response To: Re: Many HBO peeps have blocked out the truth (Quirel) : Waffle. : Names have meaning. There is a reason why the Chief is called a 'Reclaimer'. : And I think that the actual definition of "Reclaimer" would : clarify our relationship with the Forerunner. How about the biblical use of the word, as in what Jesus was, someone who brings something back from a state of error. Or as thefreedictionary.com says To bring back, as from error, to a right or proper course; reform A Reclaimer is a person who will make things right. The wrong things being what the Forerunners screwed up. And, since Bungie's original intent was that we were Forerunners then Reclaimers were Forerunners who would fix the shit that the Forerunners left behind. Note also that no non-humans were given that title. I couldn't find a perfect link for the Christian connection and its only a phrase thatI heard at some point in my life but I can't recall the context, but I found this and this :-). I think that Joe Staten is a Catholic so maybe the term Reclaimer was known to him. I was thinking in terms of claiming back what was yours and that works as well if we assume that the Forerunners would consider that all their tech and accomplishments were a Forerunner birthright. merriam-webster.com lists that sense of the verb to reclaim. a : to demand or obtain the return of In English its customary to add er to the end of a verb to refer to a person who does the verb: a person who runs is a runner and a person who reclaims is a reclaimer. So I don't know why you thought that I ignored or trampled the meaning of words when I said this: Those Forerunners who lived after the array activation on Earth were Forerunners. They called themselves Humans (the English speaking ones did) and they were Reclaimers - those who would reclaim the Forerunner stuff/birthright/keys-to-the-array/whatever. I was using the words Reclaimer and Humans in their usual sense and I used the word Forerunner in Bungie's original sense (one of the many things that Humans were and something unique to Humans of all the known, living species that we encountered in the Halo games.) : Since when? The Halo 3 terminals make it pretty clear that Humans were living
That ties in with the lost human-origins idea from the Cortana letters and idea that Forerunners had a mystery. At the time I speculated that the mystery was that they didn't know their own origins. Humans originate on Earth, our origin as a species is that we evolved on Earth and that we are related to all life on that planet (all phylogenetic analyses show this). Humans are Forerunners therefore our discovery shed light on Forerunner origins. Note especially that the focus of the images is NOT Hs. The focus is on bacteria and other life forms. If our Forerunneryness was simply down to Ps adding gene-X to human DNA then the focus would be on us. If you have found your lost homeworld then the evidence would be found in all life. You would be looking at ribosomes and the genetic code of: bacteria, archaea, protists, multicellular animals and plants. If Earth was just another uninteresting rock with run of the mill life plus one single interesting species then those images would be of that solitary species. Look at it from the F viewpoint. You find a lost colony, maybe they came from some ancient ship crash. That is a 'human' interest story for today's news. And it may not make the news considering that there is a war on. OTOH... ZOMG all life on this planet has F ribosomes! look they have our V-ATPases! Look at the steroid hormone receptors - eek we can see an entire phylogenic tree here. Those backboned animals - we sit inside a nested clade, lots of them!!!! It even goes right to the plants and bacteria. We have found our origin! This is precious, better keep it safe. : Right. While you're doing that, I got a stone here that needs to be rolled up
I haven't bothered for a while but I thought that it was worth one more stab at it. :-)
