After Halo 3 and especially Contact Harvest, it was pretty much a given that Human=Forerunner. Whether that was Bungie's intent is unknown. 343I, however, apparently decided it was more interesting to muddy the waters by giving us Cryptum, which is far as I'm aware of is the first piece of Halo fiction to unambiguously treat humans and Forerunners as separate species.
