If you backtrack to the elevator you originally descended into the facility with, it will break and crash. That's in place to prevent you from returning the way you came. You then need to backtrack and go out a door you originally encountered but never went through before in order to find the actual exit, which takes you out to where Guilty Spark finds you, not to the place with the fallen tree, Spirit and Pelican V-933. I've done the run before where instead of going back to the first elevator, I turned the correct way on the way out and simply went the new route.
