In a lot of ways there really isn't much difference between and MMO and the type of games that Bethesda makes. Essentially just imagine their games but bigger and with other players running around. You can interact with the other players if you want, or explore alone.

As far as story goes, it's really hard to say what Bungie is going to do. I know that with WoW: Cataclysm they have it set up where you can only interact with people who are at the same point in the main story as you (the world apparently changes through the course of the story). So you can be playing on the same server and side as someone, but they won't even be visible to you if you aren't at the same point. I used to play Dark Age of Camelot years ago and they handled things differently: each player had their own "story" and would run quests and play through the plot for their class. It ultimately didn't feel that important in the end though because you were just Paladin #3321 that had done the exact same quest line as the other 3320 Paladins before you (I'm not sure exactly how the stories end in WoW, and part of this feeling that things didn't matter also stemmed from the story just not being that engaging because it wasn't really the focus of the game). There was the realm vs. realm combat (picture big 3-way battles with hundreds of players and keep sieges and the like) that, if your side was doing well, could lead to bonuses to magic/weapon damage as well as access to an extra dungeon. The Old Republic appears to be approaching things more from this angle, where each class has a story that you can play through but your individual actions don't really change much of the actual world. The way the "world" around you changes in ToR is determined by which side has control of which battlegrounds on the various planets (or at least that's the way I've understood it). ToR has a focus on single player that other MMOs have lacked.

It will be interesting to see what Bungie decides to do... They seem to want a world that continues on, but MMOs have always had trouble with the story/game disconnect that I talked about above. Perhaps they'll try some new approach to presenting the story, but I wouldn't be surprised if they stuck with one of these traditional formulas, and that wouldn't be a bad thing.

Well, that went longer than I thought =P To answer your concern in a shorter manner: Other MMOs can be tackled at your own pace/by yourself easily enough (with the exception of some boss monsters) and I don't see Bungie being any different.
