Guild Wars is a good example of an MMO with strong single-player features, although it's also almost an MMO-in-name-only. The game is split into towns/outposts and combat zones. Inside towns the game works how you'd expect an MMO to work, everyone exists the same copy of the world and you'll run into lots of other people. Outside of towns however, the only people who come with you are members of your party; your party gets its own "instance" of the world. Any party slot can be filled with an AI companion, so you can play the entire game by yourself or with just a few friends if you want. Guild Wars also has no subscription fees, which I guess is made possible because of the instancing of the combat areas.
