They only are if you allow them to be. Sure, if you : don't play all the time you will fall behind in levels/armor/whatever, but : you'll only be falling behind the other hardcore people that play all the : time. This is actually really similar to playing Halo for most of your : free time because you want to stay in practice to stay competitive. It : ultimately doesn't matter if you fall behind a bit or whatever, just play : the game and have fun. Everyone gets too caught up in trying to earn as : much gold as quickly as possible or to get ahold of that new piece of : armor or that cool sword they saw that they grind for it rather than just : playing the game and letting things happen when they happen (we see the : same problem in Reach with cR and commendations). There are plenty of : people who play MMOs that aren't hardcore about it, everyone just hears : about the complaints about grinding because the hardcore players are the : ones that take the time to use Internet forums. This might be relative to your interests. It turns out my old psychology professor was something of an MMO fan. He wrote a series of articles on the site I linked, and a few of them were about why MMOs are so addicting.
