WoW can basically be played single player "with an audience." I was way behind my friends the last time I played, and had started a new character to boot, so I spent my time mostly solo leveling through the content (quite fun to experience everything) while participating in guild chat. Think of it like playing Halo while posting on HBO, if that were possible.

Most of WoW's content pre-end game is actually solo-tuned, assuming you are willing to play a class that's better solo. If you pick a class whose primary purpose is to play in a group, you may have less fun.

Now note here, there's no reason to go the WoW or EQ route just because it's an MMO. Hell, in UO you could spend your entire game time doing nothing but fighting other players (well, mainly because you would macro your character's skills to a decent level and then attack innocents to get gold, but that's another story entirely. :)

Here's my only reservation about MMOs. I don't believe that UO or EQ were developed to cause "addiction" (using this term very loosely) so much as to provide a fantasy RPG experience shared by a large number of simultaneous users. I can't be sure, but I would not be surprised to find that WoW was not developed to provoke "addiction" either, but the feature set resulted in it. Now, consultants and business types are looking at the WoW addiction model and the features that cause it, and cynically mining that for revenue. There's no reason to think this has anything to do with Bungie but I only mention it as my one reservation about where MMOs are heading as a genre.
