I don't : know. I'm a Bungie apologist, and I don't like seeing things done wrongly : by Bungie. If it's a matter of Microsoft or Bungie paying for the : marketing, then I think a lot of it could be handled better and made to : plug the actual games. God forbid a live-action ODST short is made on top : of something that shows how bad ass the game itself is. And if it's Spike : paying Bungie or Microsoft, then I hope Bungie got a cut and I'm all for : it. Why not get paid to put your baby's name in lights? Frankly I don't think it is customary practice for any developer to get paid for promotional materials. If the publisher wants it, it is because the distributor wants it, which is because the retailer wants it, and if you don't help your retailers move product, product won't move, and you won't get paid. Now, certainly the series of positive-feedback loops around the Halo franchise do short-circuit that a bit. Word of mouth is a great system of promotion, if you can get it to work for you, but it's hard to just summon up when people don't know you already. Halo games sell now because they're Halo, but only because the first Halo already was Halo. So it's perhaps less true in this case that Bungie really needs to cater to every whim of the Microsoft marketing operation, but less true doesn't mean false. If Bungie wasn't making this sort of thing for Microsoft to put on Spike, they'd be making it themselves and putting it on the website-- and who's paying them for that?
