So it looks like a weak compromise or idea to me. : Because the debut trailer isn't necessarily to hook new people into the Halo : realm, that'll likely be left to the later trailers for example the : Believe and ODST ads. I doubt much will be shown, and so I doubt what is : shown could really hook in people who have never heard of Halo or Halo : Reach. The Believe and ODST ads, that were awesome, I loved, and showed absolutely nothing about the game. Didn't make anyone watching them say "Holy shit that game looks awesome! Those graphics, and that gameplay! Damn! I have GOT to go buy that!" Maybe they should be plugging a Halo movie. And if this isn't meant to hook in people who don't already know about any of this, then what was the point in the first place of even spending the who knows how much money to put it on TV? If it's just there to target people like us who are already quite aware, then they just wasted a boatload of cash that could have been used to market Reach better in the future. And considering the game is practically a year away until release, showing this on Spike now still won't do much to keep it in the minds of players who aren't Halo-driven and are all about BioShock 2, Mass Effect 2, and any other big release coming out early. E3 is still the "main" time to do a huge reveal to a mass market, even on TV. E3 basically set up my "Christmas list" of games for the year, even though a lot have now been bumped to 2010, so now that list carries over. I'm pretty sure the majority of gamers feel the same way, otherwise E3 would have no purpose and wouldn't continue. : Advertisements are generally about selling a product, sometimes they barely : even touch upon what the product is / what it does. For the Halo series, : I'd say that the trailers are to show people what the product is, the tv : spots are just to hook new people in. Which I'd say they did quite : effectively. I agree. The TV spots absolutely hooked new people in quite effectively. Hands down. Putting this ad in the Spike VGAs? Coulda found a bigger audience and paid an equal amount (doesn't necessarily have to be a commercial during a football game), or paid a bit more for more mass market appeal.
