Wasn't H3 the first and only time Microsoft : Xbox went into the black? You'd think incentives to Bungie would be : "if you produce this trailer for us, we'll give you an awesome spiff : for it." Hell, that would probably be cheaper than paying people to : make live-action ODST commercials or Believe dioramas. I just don't like : feeling that Bungie's getting used out of all of this. I don't think anyone who actually knows the details will ever agree to divulge them, but Bungie pulled off something special by letting Microsoft swallow them, eating their lunch, and cutting their way out of the beast's belly from the inside to emerge largely unscathed, and by unscathed I mean with a reputation as a AAA maker of console first person shooters rather than as an RTS developer on the Mac, which is what they were before. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Myth was and is awesome. In the context of that, I think there's very little Microsoft could ask Bungie to do in the course of helping sell games published by Microsoft and developed by Bungie that would qualify as "getting used". If anyone's been used here, it's Microsoft, although clearly they don't think so. This was the second time Bungie traded a franchise they were essentially done with for the resources they needed to go on and make something new. The funny part is that while MS paid lip service to the idea that their real interest when they buy studios is in people, rather than assets, ultimately they let the people go and kept the assets, which either means they're a lot more altruistic than anybody gives them credit for or else a great deal more cynical. In short, I think MS can get a few Halo videos from Bungie now and again, and Bungie will still respect them in the morning. Or at least won't make a sad face over coffee.
