You need to take it with a grain of salt, though. Nobody sues : when parodies of novels or movies are made (try the books 'Bored of the : Rings' and 'The Matewix'). But if someone, say, wrote a novel with all the : same character names and places I had used, and a complete mirror of the : story, I would be annoyed. That would be copyright infringement. What if : the story was similar, had similar events, similar charcters? I wouldn't : sue, not least because this happens all the time. Different situations : will come up where intellectual property rights must be addressed : differenctly. The thing is, as Flashman has stated, there are special circumstances protecting parody under "fair use" terms, whereas another (serious?) novel with the same character names and places wouldn't be able to claim this protection unless it was for the purposes of critique or commentary, which if it was simply another fiction, arguably it couldn't. But as Flashman points out, this really does become quite a legally difficult question, which is - as it happens - intentional.
