Re: Halo Ripping and "Intellectual Property"...

: Well, I do. Because IP as a concept is used to contain many important points
: which may have no relevance to one another. Just because a case may deal
: with a copyright violation doesn't immediately mean that it has anything
: to do with patents or trademarks, which are the other principal facets of
: IP as a concept. That is why they exist as separate laws, not one law. To
: draw analogy to murder is rather missing the point - it's more like having
: a law (and concomitant set of punishments) for a nebulous term such as
: "terrorism" which can include the likes of computer crime
: alongside blowing up planes and buildings.

"Intellectual property" is just an umbrella term for law regarding valuable but intangible entities (patents, copyrights, trademarks) just like "criminal" relates to acts involving specific breaches of laws or codes (murder, theft, etc) and "tort" refers to disputes between parties (trespass, slander/libel, negligence), and so on.

Attacking your opponent's terminology does not contribute to the debate, and refusing to stand on common ground just makes it harder to argue against the status quo.

: If you want another example of how clouding the issue can be used for
: political purpose (and believe me, big businesses have many political
: machinations) just look at the recently passed Iraq Supplemental Spending
: Bill - which somehow managed to include legislature to allow the creation
: of unique electronic national ID cards. Thank heavens Blunkett got pulled
: up on his extra-governmental affairs (guffaw) before the same happened
: over here.

Please don't bring up specific political issues. Straying into this territory invites flamewars and locking.
