IP is a term used frequently to cover many, many different industries from software development to pharmaceuticals to agribusiness. As for the legitimacy of the term, it is no more or less legitimate than any English phrase, but to make reference to "intellectual property law" is to imply there is a distinct law governing IP, which there isn't. The issues that it deals with are covered by individual laws concerning Copyright, Trademarks and Patents, but these issues themselves aren't part of a whole, they have very different applications.
