In Response To: Halo Ripping and "Intellectual Property"... (kapowaz) I made different arguments towards similar ends - the link's on the front page now. I like your point that authors (of content which derives from others' work) need to show responsibility for the use of that content. Lazy copying and plagiarism are, and always will be, unacceptable. The only difference between digital and analogue copying is the ease of producing a high-quality duplicate of original material... copying has always been a contentious issue between content creators and those who make derivative works. Artists - and in this respect I include Bungie with groups such as musicians - take a gamble when they produce content. They don't deserve to have it ripped off, as it quite often is. But the flip side is that people have always 'ripped' content, with or without permission, and not always for the purpose of ripping off the original creators. Digital rights management, etcetera, offers the opportunity to put all sorts of interesting technical and legislative locks (see DMCA) against copying. And I believe that that would be a terrible loss to the community. |
