I disagree somewhat. I think it was map-dependent and situation-dependent. The AR was decent on maps like Chill Out, Damnation, and Longest; if you were able to get up close to an opponent and do the ol' circle-of-death, you could usually overwhelm even a good pistoler. The plasma rifle was the same but a lot better because of its freeze effect. People who specialized in the plasma rifle or plasma pistol could really mess you up with those weapons - at least on the right maps. Obviously they were basically useless on Blood Gulch and Hang 'em High. But on many others they were good options. Getting the drop on Shotgun Guy or Rocket Launcher Guy with a plasma rifle was a near-orgasmic experience. : Plasma greandes are great, I don't think anybody is compaining about them
That's true. Plasmas are easier to use than they were in Halo 1. They're pretty effective except against opponents that really do a lot of back and forth strafing. As an area-effect weapon, they were never that useful anyway. I see what you mean about frags, but I still say overall, a guy with a weak weapon (SMG or plasma rifle) and grenades will ALWAYS be beaten in a standard 1 vs. 1 firefight by a guy dual wielding. That's a great loss to the game, I think. Dual wielding has effectively phased out single wielding as a meaningful tactic. Only power weapons can be used against the dual wielders - well, that and the battle rifle and carbine, if you're lucky enough to have them at mid to long range. But if they're up close to you, forget about it. |
