The thing that was nice about the pistol, IMO, is that you weren't helpless when you spawned, and you always had a decent weapon. Combined with grenades that actually did something, you were a force to be reckoned with as soon as you appeared on the map. You also could hold your own at mid to long range without having to make a mad rush for a better weapon (sniper or otherwise) that might be scarce in availability. The pistol had problems (the aforementioned spawn-camping, which manifested in the worst way on Blood Gulch and Wizard). Halo 2 has replaced these with a different set of problems, from what I can see. It would help if the default games on Live spawned you with a battle rifle backup weapon; those SMGs are useless in extremis. : "I relied on the Pistol too much before and it's Bungie's fault for
A lot of people who have beef with Halo 2 don't have a problem using the weapons. If I can get the beam rifle on Colossus, I guarantee you I will rack up 20 kills and my team will win. The problem is, if the other team gets the beam rifle, it tends to go the other way. I like Halo 2 (well enough to play it about every day), but I do think some of the criticisms about its weapons and default spawns are valid. They made a lot of things in multiplayer easier (dual wielding makes killing easier; large reticules make aiming easier; sniping is easier; sticking with plasmas is easier; the sword; etc.) while making it harder and more frustrating to defend yourself after you spawn. I think those are legitimate gripes. I also think there shouldn't be such a large gap between dual wielding and single wielding with grenades. In Halo 2, single wielding with grenades at the ready gives you no discernable advantage - you're dead meat in close quarters against anyone dual-wielding. Someone with half your skill can just bum-rush you and take you down with their dual whatevers, because few single weapons are effective anymore (the plasma rifle is toothless, the SMG is a BB gun, the pistol might as well be firing caps when used solo) and the grenades don't do a thing. The only time single wielding is effective now is with power weapons (snipers, rockets), or by essentially faking a dual wield (the plasma pistol/BR combo)... or maybe when using plasmas and going for sticks. Good old frag grenades have lost their purpose, as have all the standard close combat weapons you would use with them. To me, dual wielding should be a choice, not a necessity for survival. Finally - the game is way too much about getting the drop on people now. So many weapon combos are so lethal, that a guy fresh off a spawn, or simply facing the wrong direction, doesn't stand a chance. In the original Halo, I could get shot in the back or side, turn on my attacker, and maybe do some damage or even win the fight. In Halo 2, getting shot by someone not in front of you means "wait for your next spawn." | |
