(Siva Wr'k) The reason why the Halo 2 campaign feels different at a gut level is not because of the Arbiter, is not because the plot got even bigger, it is simply because there was no foreboding sense of universal danger. Think about it. "But Qonas, the delta Halo could've been fired! The Gravemind is one evil dude controlling the nigh-unstoppable Flood!" Yes, this is true. But what made the Halo campaign so much fun and immersive, that we forgot it was a video game while playing, was the fact that we (as Master Chief) were fighting for humanity's survival. We were one man, with a scattered band of Marines, against the overwhelming Covenant. There was a very real sense of danger, a sense that in the plot, should we fail Earth could be kissed goodbye. Humanity would be no more. We were fighting a one-man war for our people, and that struck some unconscious, gut-level desire. We got sucked in with that, and as the rich plot unfolded around that we became even more a part of the Halo universe. Now while the story for Halo 2 is bloody awesome and a great continuation of Halo, we don't have that same "one-man war" danger feeling anymore. We're on the offensive. Sure, we were salivating for it but c'mon, fighting with more than a .01% chance of winning isn't that much fun. While I in no way question or dislike the fact the Covenant "invasion" of Earth was one battle group jumping the gun, the fact that Earth and mankind was not in imminent, deathly danger caused the campaign to no longer "feel like Halo, but like any other video game". | |
