Two more cents
Posted By: rageresetDate: 11/30/04 11:14 p.m.

In Response To: my two cents. *sp* (B-Sharp)

: From a purely technical standpoint (minor graphical glitches aside), Halo 2
: is superior in nearly every single way.

: Hell, you could come at an encounter in Halo 1 from several different
: directions sometimes in even the FIRST LEVEL. You could attack covies head
: on, or run around one of the side corridors and come from behind to
: surprise them. Halo 2 has very few opportunities like this.

You've nailed an aspect of the game which I think has a huge bearing on the 'not as fun' factor. Part of the appeal of Halo 1 was having to make tactical decisions - take the scorpion through the tunnel on AOTCR in a bid to take out the ghosts whilst shielded from the Wraith, or head through the chasm and hope to take out the Wraith first and mop up the stragglers? There was strategy involved and I think perhaps this is less true of Halo 2. I want to crest a hill in my ghost and come upon a full scale war. I want me and my small band of marines/elites to be ambushed by dropships sending in waves of ground forces to eliminate us once and for all, I want to fight them off while retreating to safety as Cortana calls ahead to rally ground troops and air support resulting in one hum-dinger of a showdown in a big, open area with a handful of different ways to fight/support/attack and defend. I want to surprise a large group of the enemy when theyre not expecting me. I want to be buried in the tunnels of some city or covenent spacecraft, alone but for my gun and the sound of my footsteps when suddenly a screaming flood leaps from the ceiling. We got a taste of a lot of this stuff in Halo 1 and I guess I was hoping for more of the same but on a grander scale. And this is what I believe Bungie will get back to in Halo 3 - the sort of gameplay that when you finally hit pause because you have to go to the bathroom and can't ignore it any longer, you realise you have a sheen of sweat on your forhead and you're puffing. Halo has a great story and yes, the story is necessary, but at the same time, if they made a game where I was just dropped into random scenarios like the ones described above, I'd buy it and wear the game disc as thin as my copy of Halo 1 must be..

What had me warding of fits of near delirium was the 'promise' (I use the term simply for want of a better word, I know nothing was ever promised to anyone) of the advanced AI. AI that would shoot out lights, AI that would call in support, AI that would fire on your cover and, when it found it was destructible, would pummel it to smithereens. AI that sent out scouts and set up ambushes. The sort of AI that I would be happy to go back to Halo 1 graphics in order to get.

Sounds great, but upon reflection I wonder how workable this would be. If the enemy is too smart, maybe it would be too smart for the player's good. I mean, in the end we are talking about one person against an army - realistically, the army should crush the hero ten minutes into the first level. It begs the question; how good can AI become without damaging or negating the players' experience? Food for thought.

And yes, a flashlight that turns itself off after 5 seconds is something I, too, found inexplicable.
