I totally agree with you, you put it well. I'm a die hard HALO fan, Love HALO 2 love HALO 1, but something feels different about HALO 2 as opposed to HALO 1. It doesn't feel like the same game, but both are respectfully great in their own sense. I Think there were a few things that were changed that change the feel of HALO 2, keenly the MP (Which is still insanely fun don't get me wrong.)

1. The health system changes things tacticly, and though I like both, I wish there was still health instead of just shields.

2. The lack of a 'pistol'. No, not necessarily the idea of a 3 shot kill weapon. The idea that everyone spawned with essentially the best weapon in the game. In HALO 2, by default, you start with the SMG... And let me tell you, a single SMG sucks when compared to combinations or other weapons. So, in say a 1v1 duel, such as on lockout, the first part of the game is not skill: it's luck. It's a race for the sword, rocket, or sniper (Though I don't complain about snipers.. takes skill to use them.) In HALO 1, even if you had a bad spawn and couldn't get the essential weapon for the map (Rocket or shotgun on small maps, sniper on others) You still had the best all round gun, the pistol.

People complained about the fact that it was a pistol duel all the time. This is true to an extent, but first, why is that so bad? If you had the best aim and fastest reflexes (Also known as the best aiming skill...) You won the duel. It wasn't a matter of who had the best weapon. Peope argue that the other weapons became useless. THis is not true, either. Shotguns were "teh l33t pwn sauce" on close combat levels. Rockets, well, rockets will always be rockets. Snipers were better than a pistol if used by a skillfull player. Plasma weapons were good, though mostly for SP. the plasma rifle was good for meleeing as its slow down tactics worked well. The assault rifle sucked, but had a single purpose I guess, it made you cloak faster :-p. The needler, well, it was out of place.

Now, if in HALO 2, everyone started with the battle rifle, and tha tbattle rifle had it's single shot mode in scope, and say it took 4-5 headshots to drop a guy, THEN it would still have been a battle of aim really, and though the powerful weapons such as the sword would still have their power, the skillful player would be able to use the battle rifle effectively at almost any situation. And no, this would not make any weapon useless, either. It would just mean that instead of spawning with the weakest gun, you spawned with the best rounded gun of all. Shotguns and swords would still decimate close range
Plsama+human weapon would still be an incredible combo, rockets would still be, rockets..

Sorry for the long post.. the idea is that had everyone started with a more useful weapon (Hell, even the current battle rifle would not have been bad, it is still pretty effective if you are skillful.) then the "race for the best gun" would have been less of a factor..

Anyways.. HALO 2 is great. HALO 1 is great. They both have pros and cons.. and I wouldn't take one over the other really, though HALO 2 is my choice at the time being as MP has much more to do.
